Jacksonville January 2013 Event Calendar


January isn't the most action-packed month as things slow down a bit post-Christmas, but there are still a handle of notable events for January 2013, including concerts, musicals and sports.

1. WinterFEST at Adventure Landing

WinterFEST 2012 is still going on at Adventure Landing and will be until January 13th, 2013. It features ice skating, ice sliding and a Winter-themed shopping village with nightly "snowfalls," which are actually falling bubbles. WinterFEST takes the place of Adventure Landing's Beach Blvd. water park during the cold weather.

2. 2013 Gator Bowl

The Jaguars stadium was built for three reasons. 1) To serve the Jaguars. 2) To serve the annual Florida-Georgia game. And 3) For the annual Gator Bowl, from which the stadium's previous name was taken. The 2013 Gator Bowl features Northwestern and Mississippi State. The Gator Bowl is the sixth-oldest college bowl game, and has been played since 1946. This year's sponsor is TaxSlayer.com, an online income-tax service.

3. Synchronized Tree Light Shows

January 1st is the last day for the synchronized light shows at the Jacksonville Landing. The shows, featuring a 56-foot tall Christmas tree, lasts 10 minutes and is repeated on the hour between 6 and 9 p.m.

4. Misery Jackals Live at Phoenix Taproom

On Sunday night, January 6th, the acoustic-rock group Misery Jackals will be playing at Phoenix Taproom in Downtown Jacksonville (near the Greyhound Station). The show starts at 7:30 p.m. with a $5 cover charge.

5. Catty Shack Ranch Daytime Tours

A public nightly feeding is available on Friday, January 4th at the Catty Shack Big Cat Ranch. Tours are given between 6 and 7 p.m., and the feeding begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children age 3-11. Children under 2 get in free.

6. Elvis Lives

Elvis Lives! -- for one night in Jacksonville at least, before moving on to other cities. The Elvis Lives tour includes some of the more well-known Elvis impersonators, including Bill Cherry, Leo Days and Ben Klein. The performance is at the Moran Theater on January 19th, 2012.

7. Mary Poppins presented by The Artist Series

Mary Poppins, presented by the Artist Series (Broadway in Jacksonville), comes to the First Coast on January 23, 2012. Tickets start at $37. The performance will be held at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts.

8. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony Rock the Bells

The hip-hop group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony reunites for the "Rock the Bells" tour. All five original members of the group will be performing. This all ages show is at Brewster's Megaplex on January 25, 2012. Tickets range from $30 to $75.
