Greatest Jaguars Players of All Time

The Best of the Jacksonville Jaguars

By

The Jaguars may not have enjoyed that much success in the past decade, but since the team's inception in 1995, it has fielded plenty of talent. The following players, however, stand out above the pack as the Jaguars' greatest.

1. Tony Boselli, Left Tackle

It's hard to dispute left tackle Tony Boselli as the best player in Jaguars history. If not for an unfortunate shoulder injury, Boselli would likely be regarded as a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer. The Jaguars' first ever draft pick made the Pro Bowl five times and the All-Pro team three times. He was a member of the NFL's All-Decade Team (1990s) and the first player inducted into the Jaguars Ring of Honor.

2. Fred Taylor, Running Back

If not for a reputation of being injury-prone in his early years, Fred Taylor would likely be talked about as a potential Hall of Fame inductee. The Jaguars' all-time leading rushier, Taylor also ranks 15th all-time in the NFL for rushing yards. He retired in 2011 and was inducted into the Jaguars Ring of Honor in 2012. Taylor finished his 13-year career with 11,695 rushing yards and 80 touchdowns. His deceptive power and explosive speed -- particularly early in his career -- made him a threat to score from anywhere on the field.

3. Jimmy Smith, Wide Receiver

Jimmy Smith is by far the Jaguars best receiver -- ever. In fact, the club has struggled to replace him since his 2005 retirement. As of December 2012, no Jaguars wide receiver has accumulated 1,000 or more yards since Smith. He and Keenan McCardell combined to form the "Thunder and Lightning" duo. Smith, with a penchant for making big plays down the field, was "Lightning."

4. Mark Brunell, Quarterback

Few would say Mark Brunell was a great quarterback, but most would say he was very good, particularly in his prime. Brunell, known for his scrambling ability early in his career, eventually developed into a solid pocket passer with a reputation for taking care of the football. Brunell made three Pro Bowls in the late-1990s, and led the Jaguars to the AFC Championship game twice (1996 and 1999).

5. Maurice Jones-Drew, Running Back

Maurice Jones-Drew has been an on-the-field performer and fan favorite since he was drafted in 2006. The diminutive (5'7") second-round pick exploded in his rookie season, averaging nearly six yards per carry in a reserve role to running back Fred Taylor. As of 2012, Jones-Drew has made the Pro Bowl three times and already has one league rushing title under his belt. In 2011, he eclipsed Fred Taylor as the Jaguars' all-time touchdown leader.

6. Keenan McCardell, Wide Receiver

Keenan McCardell is the second-best wide receiver in Jaguars history, and combined with Jimmy Smith to form "Thunder and Lightning." McCardell was the "Thunder" part of the equation, known for making tough plays over the middle of the field. He played for the Jaguars from 1996 to 2001, producing more than 1,000 receiving yards four times.

7. Marcus Stroud, Defensive Tackle

Marcus Stroud, the Jaguars' first-round draft pick in 2002, anchored a tough defensive line in the mid-2000s. Stroud, together with DT John Henderson, who barely misses this list, formed what was considered the best interior d-line in the NFL. Stroud was a three time All Pro and Pro Bowl selection.

8. Daryl Smith, Linebacker

Daryl Smith, known for his down-to-business, soft-spoken nature, has quietly been one of the Jaguars' most consistent players since he was selected in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft. Smith is the Jaguars all-time tackle leader.

9. Tony Brackens, Defensive End

Tony Brackens, selected by the Jaguars in the second round of the 1996 NFL Draft, was one of the team's biggest defensive playmakers throughout the late-1990s. He had a penchant for stripping the ball, and remains the Jaguars' all-time sack leader despite not playing a down since 2003.

10. Donovin Darius, Strong Safety

Donovin Darius roamed the Jaguars secondary from 1998 to 2006, acquiring a reputation as one of the hardest hitters in the NFL.
